Entry from: Lago Atitlan, Guatemala Entry Title: "Feria" Entry: "Feria de Santiago Apóstol Each town in Latin America has a patron saint looking after it; my town is looked after by Santiago. July 25 is celebrated around the Catholic world as the feast day of St James. In Spanish St James is translated to Santiago. So for one week around July 25th there were activities every day. This is called Feria. Schools have holidays and it is an exciting time when a fair takes over the town. This is another event that is best summarized it photos because there was so many new sights, sounds and smells that it is hard to capture everything. To begin with, it started Wednesday night with a Beauty Pageant and a girl wearing her "sporty" outfit on a catwalk covered in pine needles dancing to none other than the Rocky Soundtrack. I watched in amazement and realizing that I was in for some new sights. There were two beauty pageants. The first night was for Ladina girls -- or girls who do not dress is traditional clothes, are of more mixed blood (Spanish, German, Mayan), and who do not speak Mayan languages. Each of the six candidates represented a school or the municipality. Since I am working for the muni that meant that all the ladies from the office were running around getting our candidate ready.
